FIRST HOUR - SIX MAXIMS

We must move from a cognitive, observer understanding of our situation to a felt embodiment of our predicament, from intellectual knowledge to bodily acknowledgment. This will be our aim in the first half of this gathering: to feel in our bones the plight we find ourselves facing with climate change.

The six maxims we will explore in council:

Work hard to grasp the immensity of the change;
Cultivate radical hope;
Have a line in the sand;
Appreciate the astonishing opportunity of life at this time;
Train your body and mind;
And act for the future generations of all species.

The climate crisis is an initiatory threshold for humanity.

The theologian Frederick Buechner invited each of us to find "…the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet." Joanna Macy, PH.D, is a scholar of Buddhism, general systems theory, and deep ecology. A respected voice in the movements for peace, justice, and ecology, she interweaves her scholarship with five decades of activism. Jonathan Gustin, M.A, MFT, is a purpose guide, psychotherapist, and meditation teacher in private practice in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 27 years. Jonathan is the founder and lead teacher of the Purpose Guides Institute and Green Sangha. He has taught purpose discovery at San Quentin Prison and also serves as adjunct faculty at John F. Kennedy University.

David Schenck is the former Director of the Ethics Program, Medical University of South Carolina, and was on the faculty of the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society, Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Schenck taught philosophy and religion for 20 years and has published widely in bioethics, philosophy, and religious studies. He was founding executive director of a free medical clinic, healthcare advocate for the homeless, and a 25-year hospice volunteer.

Larry R. Churchill is Professor of Medical Ethics Emeritus, Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He played a major role in developing the medical ethics program at Vanderbilt, and prior to that at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was Chair of the Dept. of Social Medicine. His new book with Nancy King and Gail Henderson is entitled Bioethics Reenvisioned: A Path Toward Health Justice and will be available in fall 2022 from UNC Press.
